Tips about Virus, spyware and Hackers

Many computer users have dealt with the irritating and possibly dangerous risk that is malware. While there are techniques to remove malware from a computer, this hassle can be circumvented by applying some basic computer security principles.

Steps:

1)Use a firewall. This cannot be stressed enough! Firewalls act as gates that do not allow malicious programs onto a computer. There are quite a few third-party firewalls that are advertised, and some are effective. However, for the average computer user, the Windows Firewall (assuming you are using windows XP SP2 or above) is more than enough protection.

2)Choose a good firewall.A good firewall needs to work in conjunction with Anti-Virus software. When choosing anti-virus programs, it is important to note the difference between virus scanners and full anti-virus suites with resident protection. Resident protection allows for the anti-virus program to detect and stop any malware that manages to get past the firewall.
Refrain from connecting to the web without some kind of protection. Even if you are not browsing, the connection remains open on all DSL and cable modems. Once the software is up and running, the computer may be connected.

3)We used to say, "Practice common sense when surfing the web" . . ., today, popular, completely legitimate websites are often targeted by cybercriminals who seek to inject scripts onto them that will attack your computer. Your best response is to make certain your computer get the latest updates and patches automatically, run a good security suite, and back up your data.

4)Be vigilant! Constant vigilance is a must in safe computing. Any abnormalities in operation, or trouble with the system, should be taken as the result of malware and should be treated as such. If you so much as suspect that your computer is compromised, run a virus scan immediately, it never hurts.

5)Do not panic. If you believe your computer has been compromised, and a virus is found, take a step back and survey the situation. If your antivirus software cannot remove the virus, and you do not believe you are capable of handling the job, simply remove your computers internet connection, and call a professional technician.

6)Some antivirus products come with a self-booting recovery disk. These often can repair infections that standard antivirus software, running under Windows, can't.

Some tips for you:
1)Do not trust the online virus "scanners", they can not access your computer to a full degree and are often methods of malware propagation themselves
2)A compromised system that is online will compromise other systems, if your system is compromised, disconnect it from the internet.
3)If you are using a Windows version that supports System Restore, make sure you have restore points being set frequently, for use in the worst case scenario.

How to Secure My PC From Viruses, Spyware, and Hackers.

Steps:

1)Start with a clean computer (new or recently reformatted)

2)Install good anti-virus software such as Symantec's Norton AntiVirus or Sophos Anti-Virus and do a full system scan right away.
Schedule your anti-virus software to do regular scans (at least weekly)

3)If using a broadband connection, hide your computer behind a Router.
Install a good firewall, such as Norton Firewall or ZoneAlarm. Make sure all patches are updated.

4)Download Microsoft Update from http://update.microsoft.com (different from Windows Updates). Microsoft Updates also updates software such as Microsoft Office that Windows Update doesn't.

5)Download good anti-spyware and anti-adware software. Recommended programs are Spybot Search and Destroy, Ad-Aware 2007, and SpywareBlaster.

6)Download BeClean (Google search for it) to clean up unnecessary files on your machine

Tips:

1)If you're not starting with a clean machine, this can help you clean it up, but can't guarantee you'll get rid of all security risks.

2)"Pay-for" antivirus and firewall software are usually better than "free" software if you don't want to spend a lot of time manually updating and scanning.

How to remove Spyware

Steps:

1)Run Windows Update by either starting Internet Explorer and going to Tools>Windows Update, or click Start go to Run and paste this: %SystemRoot%\system32\wupdmgr.exe Windows Updates will ensure your PC is secured from known threats to the OS version. Restart if told to do so.

2)Download and install an antispyware program (such as Spybot Search and Destroy or Spy Remover or Lavasoft Adawareor AVG Anti-Spyware). (See latest test results of how these and other anti spyware programs performed.)

3)Update definition files when prompted.

4)Restart in "Safe Mode"

5)Scan your machine (this could take a while).

6)Remove any spyware that is found.

7)Reboot your machine and scan again.

8)Scan with your Anti Virus program if your problems aren't completely gone. If you don't have any antivirus software, ask your ISP if they provide any. If so use theirs, if not, either purchase some or use AVG Free Antivirus

8)Download HijackThis if it's still not gone.

9)Run it, and save a log. Go to hijackthisaid.org and post a HijackThis log in the correct section, and wait for directions on how to remove the malware off you computer.

Tips:
1)Download Firefox web browser and use it instead of Internet explorer. It is much more secure.

2)If you are running windows XP, use the system restore feature to restore your system to an earlier date. If this works, you can save up on lots of energy. Make sure definition files are up to date.

3)Many people think that using Firefox will prevent infections, this is not true. Firefox doesn't support ActiveX which is where many spyware infections from browsing websites come from. However, if you download software that installs spyware, using Firefox, Internet Explorer or any other browser won't matter, you'll get infected. Try to keep the mindset of "Nothing's free" if it's a free application, from a vendor you don't know specifically to be reputable, don't download it.

4)Another useful antispyware program is Windows Defender.
Keep a firewall installed. A firewall makes it so that you must authorize programs to use the internet before they can get on. This way, if you install spyware, it cannot submit your personal information. Ask your ISP if they provide a firewall, if so use theirs. If not, either purchase one or use [url=http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1012_zl/zlsSetup_60_667_000.exe Zone Alarm].

5)Use both Spybot and Ad-Aware as they normally catch different things.

6)Use Spybot's immunize feature to stop spyware from being compatible with your PC.

7)Update your computer with Microsoft Update. MS Update fixes certain security holes in programs.

8)If you are extremely paranoid, try learning to use a non-Windows OS. A massive majority of spyware only targets Windows. Linux is typically safest.
You can also restart your computer in safe mode and run the anti-spyware program from there. However, this is not recommended for the inexperienced user.

9)Avoid downloading .exe files except if it’s from a trusted site or well known company that distributes a certain application. .exe is an executable file (meaning they launch a program or setup). This applies especially for those who use p2p applications; users disguise .exe applications as mp3s or movie files, and when the downloader launches it the program claims to be extracting the files but instead it installs a bunch of bad programs!
Even popular sites can distribute spyware in there downloads, so always choose custom installation to know exactly what you’re installing. You can uncheck the files you don’t want.

How to Remove Virtumod Trojan (Virus)

This is a very annoying type of Malware/Trojan which integrates into your system and Internet Explorer and runs many background processes, making your PC and internet conenction slow.Spreads extremely fast, though doesn't cause any data loss.We will learn how to get rid of it,when your antivirus program doesn't.

Steps:
1)Scan your PC with an antivirus program (can be trial) and write down all instances of the virus.

2)Restart your PC and go into Safe Mode (Press F8 on startup)

3)Locate all the files (Mostly in temp and system32 directory) and delete them all

4)Restart

5)Now check if there are any left

Tips:
1)It is recommended to use Dr. Web as antivirus software.Fast scan and great virus database.

2)Mostly the virus files are application extensions (.dll) and have random names like rgsdghds.dll

meh people are too concerned about viruses today.
Many antivirus/firewall programs really dont work very well, and or bog down your computer to the point where you think the antivirus is actually a virus slowing down ur comp.

My suggestion:
1. Don't be retarded and DL Free ScreeNSaVerzX!!!
2. Download only from trusted source
3. Use McAfee Site Advisor
4. Use Windows firewall

With that you can go without firewall/antivirus (ideal for gamers)

Um, yea, sure, you'll have some very very minor viruses that don't even affect your computer.

Easiest thing to do if you have a fast computer to use a sandboxing anti-virus. Like Bufferzone Best one ever.
