Fever 1793 Test - By Laurie Halse Anderson
1] Mattie’s grandfather was a kind, intelligent, and loving person. He was like a father to Mattie for his love to her, and for all the things he taught her. Their roles changed during the course of the novel from, just wanting to run a coffee shop, to trying to raise children, and cure sick children.
2] In 1793, a 14-year old girl was expected to clean, cook, and do a lot of hard work. In 1793, a 14-year old boy was expected to farm, or trade, and to protect the family. Now, girls are expected to do a few chores such as cleaning or cooking, but nothing extremely hard. Now, boys are expected to not get into fights, and do good in school. Typical 14-year olds (Both genders) would go to school, play sports, play games, and try to be nice to their parents.
3] The color yellow is used throughout Fever 1793. Yellow is used because when someone has Yellow Fever, their eye color changes to yellow.
Page 122- “An ugly yellow scrap from a ripped bodice was still tied to the handle of the front door, which was open.”
I think the yellow scrap is used to describe the yellow thing they put on the doors, if there are fever victims inside.
Page 214 - “Yellow fever had scattered the residents of Philadelphia to the four winds”
The “Yellow” that is used in that sentence is used to describe the type of fever (yellow fever).
Page 243 - “The yellow sun rose, a giant balloon filled with prayers and hopes and promise”.
The yellow in that sentence is used to describe the Yellow sun.
I believe that throughout the course of the story, the color yellow was used differently. Near the beginning and middle, it was used to describe the victim’s eyes, the yellow scraps, and the Yellow fever. At the end, yellow was used to describe the sun, which is different from the beginning. In the beginning (and middle), yellow symbolizes death and no hope. At the end, yellow symbolizes good health, survival, hope, and promise.
4] Eliza is one of the heroes in Fever 1793. She shows that she is a hero when she takes care of William, Robert, Mother, and Matilda. The result of her taking care of William and Robert, is them now being healthy and alive. Eliza is also a hero for all the food she makes and gives to people who are sick from the fever. Finally, Eliza is a hero because when Matilda mentions another intrusion, Eliza lifts her knife in response and says “If they try again, we’ll be ready.” All of these examples show how heroic Eliza is in Fever.
