Biography
Leif Erikson was born in the year 980. Even if he was born in Iceland he was a Vikings. Sometimes people called him Leif the Lucky. Leif's father was Eric the Red. Leif didn't always live with his family. When he was 8 he lived with Thyrker a German. But when he was 12 he moved back with his family. Leif and his friends watched ships come into the harbor. They also listened to the sailors tales. Leif became a Christian after his father became one. Leif became a Christian in Norway. Leif also comverted people to become a Christian.
Major Achievements
At age 19, Leif, went off on his first voyage on his own. He had to go to Norway because his father always said that his first voyage had to be to Norway because he is a Norwegian. When Leif came back he brought back traders for his father. About 999 Leif sailed to Iceland and then to Norway where he became a Christian. When Leif went south and west he found a place were grapes were growing. Later, Leif called it Vineland (or wine land) and now what we think this is called Newfoundlands. People don't think that Leif was the first to go to North America. Well, Christopher Columbus wasn't born in the year 980. But now people think that Chinese were the first to go to North America. I think it remains as a mystery.
Country
The three major Viking countries are Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Vikings moved to Greenland because of the over control population. Eric the Red was the first to go to Greenland. When he came back he took his family and 25 boats of settlers to live in Greenland.
Impact on the New World
Religion was very important to the Vikings. They worshiped many gods. The important ones were Odin, Thor, and Frey. Odin was king of all Norse gods and goddess. Also the king of battle and death. Wednesday was the day to worship Odin. Thor was ruler of the sky. He was the god of lightening, thunder, rain, storms, and wind. He was popular because of his great power that effected the peoples lives. Thursday was named after Thor. Frey was god of agriculture and love. He created which couples should go together and which should not. Vikings like to fight. Warriors were bold, adventurous, and fear less. They murdered women, children, and men. Some people think the Vikings were normal people but they aren't. They're wild and fearless after eating certain mushrooms and other foods that have drugs in them.
