AMD gets seriously owned by intel both through stability and performance. The only downfall for intel is the huge price.
Atm i own a Quad Core 2 6600 and i'm pretty pleased with it. I'm more of an intel fanatic though
Anyway intel is aimed at multi tasking, being able to perform better with multiple applications running at the same time, while AMD is good for one application... this will make your alt+tabbing moments hell

AMD is just good for making efficient CPUs, but when it comes to speed and power, Intel p4wns them. |

Just get an AMD if you're after a (slow) eight-core CPU configuration or power-saving components.
