Run analysis program like Everest ,AIDS32 or even CPU-Z to find your Mem speed. You will need to buy new RAM of the same speed.
Next, check your motherboard to see the maximum supported RAM, since you have 2 slots, I will assume its either 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB max.
Next is buying the RAM from retailers or from online stores such as Buy.com - Computers, Electronics, Digital Cameras, Books, DVDs, Music, Games, Software, Toys, Sports or Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more!. Since you mention 1GB sticks then you can get 2x1GB sticks at your RAM's Mhz.

Check out the Crucial website, there you can scan your computer and they will recommend which type of ram sticks you need - you can also buy directly from the site too. | | The Following User Says Thank You to tobsmonster2 For This Useful Post: | |

How much memory your Windows OS will recognize depends on which version of Windows you are running. 32-bit versions of Windows will see (and utilize) only 3GB or 3.5GB. To utilize more memory, install a 64-bit version of your OS. More information about OS memory maximums can be found at Crucial FAQ - Answer.
is this saying i can update something else other than ram to increase performance? 32-bit to a 64-bit of something?

No. upgrading windows xp costs WAY more than buy a simple stick of ram. even 512 will give you a greater speed.

The above link is a $40ish 1GB ram stick for your laptop (remember to buy 2 if you are going to upgrade).
As for your other question, any system with above 3GB of ram should go with x64bit version operating system. But..the catch is that you don't have all that much choice in x64bit OS option. Say you have 4GB of ram (2x2GB), you WON'T go with Window XP x64 because of the lack of driver support. You won't go with Linux variants because...there is no games on Linux . So what do you have left? Vista x64 (Vista x64 have the best driver support)...BUT as per experience Vista is a memory hog. Throw any amount of RAM at it and it will eat up at least 30% of it. That means your 4GB of RAM + Vista x64 = (.7)(4) = 2.8, kind of back where you started.
