I like destops more than laptops.
Desktops:
1. Easy to get parts to upgrade.
2. Since everything is not integrated into the motherboard you can isolate hardware problems a little bit better.
3. dont have to flip the computer upside down to add/remove memory. Or even take out the keyboard and find the memory compartment.
4. Desktops can handle better video cards if your a gamer. (The notebooks are getting SLI now but even alienware laptops can fry eggs. Just wait a few mins of usage

)
5. Although desktops are huge to carry compared to laptops. You can buy the mini towers or cube towers. They are very compact and not bad at all. Some carry quite a punch with the right case.
6. Large hard drive capacity.
7. Noise can be an issue if you build your own machine. Most manufacturer comps are pretty darn quiet.
Laptops:
1. Take it anywhere with you. Very mobile and takes mins to pack up and have it ready to lan wherever you want.
2. Battery life is an issue. If your near a place with a plug then your good to go. Turions/Centrino cpu's are getting better with battery life. My turion lasts me a good 2 hrs 30mins - 3 hours.
3.Most laptops come with built in wifi. Theres lots of available hot spots around so you can get internet where ever you are.
4. Video cards are ok on laptops unless you get a high performance laptop. You can actually upgrade the video card on those units.
5. Lacks hard drive space.
6. Depending on how long you use it. It can tend to heat up.
7.Fairly quiet. Prolly only thin you notice is the indicator lights.
Overall they both have their cons and pro's. I have some friends who only have laptops and game on them all the time. It just really goes by preference. I love desktops because I build them myself and I know what it is capable of doing. I can get the most out of my computer and since i know the parts. I dont need to call india if i have a problem with my equipment. Just contact the manufacturer and get a RMA . You can get a cheap laptop but you might be spending more to upgrade it than a desktop. Hard drives kill laptops in initial space unless you get a external hard drive. My laptop now has a 80gb hard drive which isnt bad but compared to my desktop has a 320gb. i never really worry about space. Dont go for a budget laptop unless your gonna use it for school. I had one and it wasnt too good with any game. Even some old ones.
Also for laptops you can use cell phone services to have internet access pretty much wherever you are in the USA. I have sprint and when I dont have a wifi connection. I just use my phone to connect and game away!
