First you need to make sure your video card had dual head support (most new cards will) which is a single card that can run two monitors. After you plug in both monitors you just need to set it up using your video card's options.
I just got a second monitor, I use it as one I can drag programs into and watch who's online when gaming. I have a Nvidia 7600GS BTW.
