This was from Maximum PC Mag, and it's not on the internet, I don't want to scan these into my other computer so I'll be posting the full text guide. WARNING DO NOT OVERCLOCK IF YOU DON'T WANT THE RISK OF YOUR COMPUTER FRYING UP (I mean that literally) ALSO DO NOT DO NOT OVERCLOCK IF YOU DON'T HAVE A BACKUP COPY OF YOUR FILES AND WINDOWS. Another thing is that Overclocking MIGHT NOT WORK FOR EVERYBODY
Well, here goes.
Step 1. Back up your data.
Step 2. Enter your Bios. This can be done by hitting the Del, F1, or F2 key, depending on your motherboard. Mine's F2, and my other computer is Del so it varies.
Step 3. Change your CPU'S Multiplier. A CPU's speed is clocked by its system bus speed by its clock multiplier. For example, a Core 2 Quad processor has a speed bus speed of 1066 MHz. Its multiplier is 10 so it's speed is 10GHz, but because it's quad core, the 1066 MHz is actually divided by 4. That means it has 266MHz, times 10 is 2.66Ghz. Now in order to get to your overclocking "screen" you have to look around your bios. Once you find your CPU Multiplier, you should change it 1 time or so. (For example, from 10-11.)
Step 4. Increase the voltage. You have to look for this too because all the motherboards are different. You have to set the voltage a little higher. You should also have a decent power supply.
Step 5. Restart your computer and try to get in. If windows can't load, it means it's unsuccessful. What you should do is try to get back into your bios and change everything back to normal. If you can't get into your bios, you should take off the cover and and look for the battery. You should take the battery out and back in. That should reset your bios. If you can get windows to load, you should test it. If it freezes, that means it works, but it's unstable.

Lol..there is so much more to it..such as..
FSB:RAM ratio
Changing the FSB (Most CPU multipliers are locked)
Also you should disable advance CPU features, such as step speed, thermal monitoring, etc

And well I don't think its possible for a CPU to start on fire, if you have a decent and new system, then the computer will just shut down on too hot of a CPU. But funny concept. Quote:

Just think of it this way: YOU DO NOT NEED TO OVERCLOCK! Don't do it. rofl. | I wouldn't not overclock; however if you comp is prebuilt overclocking will void your waranty. Plus stock cooling isn't gonna cut it. I got my q6600 to 2.8 Ghz with a huge a$$ cpu cooler.

Overclocking needs a stable arse motherboard, stable memory modules (RAM) and the CPU must be able to handle it. Oh, and the CPU cooling system also needs to be able to handle the CPU.
At least 200MHz over the stock speed would do for most people.

Not really, but it depends if your hardware can handle it.
