Gameplay-10/ 10
Obviously, the gameplay is the best part of this game, and it doesn’t disappoint. You can do anything, in any order, like attack, move, etc. But, this game gives me something that ’Tactics for the Playstation didn’t. You can now ’re-move’ if you find out that you can’t target a person from where you just landed. For example, if my Moogle went two spaces to his left, and I found out that I couldn’t cast my spell because it wouldn’t hit anyone, I can go back to before I ever selected ’move’ and do it over. Very handy! Then, you have your abilities. Ability learning is similar to Final Fantasy 9’s way of getting abilities. You get ’AP’ after you complete missions. Equipment gives you certain abilities. One weapon will give ’Esuna’ to a White Mage, while that same weapon will give ’Unicorn’ to a Summoner. That may not be the exact abilities for a weapon, but you get the idea. The ’Rod’ weapon gives you the abilities ’Blizzard’, ’Thunder’, and ’Fire’ to the Black Mage for use in battle, as long as you can still have that weapon equipped. When you get enough AP, you master the ability and do not need the weapon equipped to use the ability. Let’s say you need 40 more AP to master ’Fire’. After you complete a mission, you may get some AP, and the amount varies. So, you can master that ’Fire’ after the next mission, maybe. Your characters can switch ’classes’, and non-main characters get different portraits when they are in a class. Each class can equip different weapons, and each learns their own abilities, just like each class gets different stat gains at level ups. There are so many possibilities.
Story-8/ 10
You are a new kid that moves into a city called St. Ivalice, and you have 2 friends; Mewt, a quiet boy whom some kids pick o because he is ’wimpy’, and Ritz, an awesome girl with pink hair and a rockin’ attitude. Anyways, you enter a name for your main guy, and you get into a snowall fight. The snowball fight teaches you the basics of battling, and you get to hit people! Yay! (No, really, it’s fun.) After someone hits Mewt with a rock-filled snowball, (Told you they don’t like him) and Mewt goes to but a book. He comes to your house after and reads the book, which is almost unreadable. During the night, St. Ivalice warps into Ivalice, the magical land of weapons, magic, and races. (They even have Moogles!) I won’t spoil the rest though...
Sound/ Graphics- 10/ 10
Wow. Sound in this game...is unbelievable. It’s so...peaceful. But it sets to the mood of the game when the need arises. Battles are incredibly detailed, with weapon noises, and the little ’bleep-bleep’ when you move your menu around isn’t annoying. Then, we have the graphics. Even more ’wow’. The graphics are kick-butt detailed, and no building looks identical. This game has a slight ’anime’ feel to it, For example, the character portraits. Everything pushes the Gameboy Advance to it’s limits, and it is good. Trust me. It’s good.
Replayability/ Play time-10/ 10
Play time? Well, how about 300 missions? Yep, there are 300 missions to do, and you can unlock characters after you beat the game, max-out your character’s levels, and master every ability. That is alot to do. There’s a bunch of replayability here folks, so this will take you, roughly, around 65-70 hours, just for all the missions. Good luck!
