Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops (officially abbreviated MPO) is a stealth-based game published by Konami and developed by Kojima Productions for the PlayStation Portable released in 2006. It is the fourth Metal Gear title for the PlayStation Portable and the first one to retain the series' action-based gameplay. It is also the first canonical outing of the series for a portable platform (that is not adapted from a previous game), being a direct sequel to Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. It was originally planned as a new non-franchise title

and its sequel, which were turn-based strategy games with stealth elements on the PSP, MPO retains the action-based gameplay from the console iteration, drawing heavily from Snake Eater and featuring similar camera controls from Subsistence.

The game also contains a Wi-Fi-enabled multiplayer mode, an expansion of the "Metal Gear Online" mode previously featured in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. The player's performance in the Online Mode affects their gameplay in the single player campaign, as you are not only able to recruit and trade soldiers from beaten opponents, but they also have the ability to take your soldiers. Also, certain multiplayer options make characters lost in multiplayer permanently removed from the player's single player roster (see below).

The main addition to MPO is the "Comrade System". Instead of the solo-based missions that the series is known for, MPO goes for a squad-based approach, with Snake having to recruit his own allies and form his own team of trained specialists. At the beginning of each mission, the player must compose a four-man squad, which usually includes Snake himself, and then send the desired squad into the battlefield. Each member of Snake's squad has their own strengths and weaknesses. While some units are best utilized on the battlefield, others may specialize in producing items, healing allies, or providing intel for each of the game's maps.

During gameplay, the player controls only one squad member at a time. The squad members not in use hide themselves inside a cardboard box, and can be swapped into play when the player-controlled character finds a "hiding spot", where they can hide in their own cardboard box.

Characters who are killed in combat are eliminated from the game. The player can abort the mission if they feel one of their comrades is dying, or they may choose to restart the mission if a favorite character has died (similar to Fire Emblem games). This does not apply to major plot-based characters, who instead of being eliminated from the team, are sent into the infirmary to recover.

A variety of methods can be employed to expand one's squad. If an enemy character is tranquilized or stunned, they can be dragged to a waiting pick-up truck and captured. After a period of game time, the captured soldier will become a member of your team. Also, enemy characters can be dragged to an ally waiting in a cardboard box, where, through the use of a transceiver frequency, they will be ordered to transport the enemy for you, saving stamina. In online combat, one of the losing player's squad may be forfeited to the winner's team. And by accessing PSP into certain hotspots using the system's Wi-Fi feature, special bonus characters can be accessed. The PSP GPS Receiver can also be used to similar effect. Because some of the player's recruits include former enemy soldiers or personnel, they can walk among the enemy undetected as long as the player avoids doing suspicious actions.

Another new feature is the surround indicator added to the game's HUD. Similar to the radar in previous titles, the surround indicator allows players to determine the relative proximity of enemy soldiers by the noises they make. The surround indicator is composed of two circles; the outer circle displays the noises made by enemies and inner circle displays noises made by the player themself.

Six years after the events of Operation Snake Eater, members of the FOX Unit had led an insurrection, breaking allegiance with the CIA. Snake, also, is targeted by the FOX Unit, who attacks and captures him.

It is now November in the year 1970. Snake is being tortured and interrogated by FOX member, Cunningham. His goal: to find out the whereabouts of the missing half of the Philosopher's Legacy. The United States branch of the Philosophers had acquired half of the Legacy from Russia at the conclusion of Snake Eater, but the other half was still at large. Snake has no idea where it is, so he is beaten and kept in captivity.

Snake is left in a cell next to Roy Campbell, an American Green Beret sent in to investigate the base. His entire unit was wiped out. Through conversation with Campbell, Snake learns he is on the San Hieronymo Peninsula, an abandoned Soviet missle base located near Colombia. Snake makes his way to a communications base, where he tries to contact his old CO, Major Zero. Instead, he is greeted by Para-Medic. Para-Medic explains to Snake that Major Zero was placed under arrest a month ago by the Pentagon, under suspicion of treason. She also explains the current situation to Snake: that a CIA unit (FOX) has stolen a top-secret US weapon and fled the country. The rogue unit is demanding independence from the US and Soviet Union in negotiations, in order to create a new military nation. Zero was charged with instigating the revolt, as well as Snake, who, the military believes, led the rebellion. She also explains that any members of FOX who didn't join the rebellion were killed, and that all that had remained of FOX were members who specialized in solo missions, giving the Pentagon an MO for accusing Snake, as the only soldier who could have pulled off killing all other members of FOX would, in fact, be Snake.

Snake also speaks to Sigint, who tells Snake that the only way for him to clear his name is to find and apprehend the leader of the rebellion, dead or alive. To complicate matters, FOX has also convinced several of the Russian soldiers staged on the Peninsula to join their side by simply taking over the chain of command for a Red Army unit that was secretly stationed inside the Colombian territory.

Story: The storyline picks up a few years after the events of MGS3: Snake Eater or Subsistance. Once again the player will be in the shoes of Naked Snake or Big Boss. The story is to expected from veteran MG fans, though may dissapoint others. Unlike the other games, the cutscences are revealed in a digital comic style rather than in game models. Also, to veteran MG fans may seem unwelcomed to the new changes this game brings up, and can leave the other games seem out of place or creates more questions than answering previous ones. Also, unlike the other MG games, the story seems some what shallow. The story doesn't pick up untill the very end and fails to really get into depth soon enough before the game's climax. I highly encourage the reader to play atleast MGS3 and/or MGS to get the story.

Graphics:Amazing graphics. This is the game that other developers should be pressing for on th PSP. To sum it up, the graphics come very close to its PS2 counterparts. Though some of the textures seem low res at times and a lack of detail in apparent, espaesially to those who played MGS3.

GamePlay:The core gameplay that makes Metal Gear is all here. Thought there is a lack of a few things. Neck breaking, throat slicing, corner peek with FPV and pressure sensitive actions didn't make the cut. Controls are very similar to the others except that he inventory system has been changed drastically to fit the portable needs. Rather than having the shoulder buttons to swith through inventory and weapons(R2 L2 on PS2) the inventory is the holding of the 0 button. Unlike the others, there are only a limit to four slot. Recruiting also now plays a big part. You no longer take on the enemy by yourself but have the ability to recruit enemies by various means to create attack and support teams to help you out. Though long time fans may not need their support actually. The game is now mission based rather than the traditional long term play through much like REs and the original MGS. These tidbit mission are pretty short to complete and oftenly well designed. The problem is that some missions are so easy it will take less than a minute or so to complete if you know where it is to go.

Sound: Sound effects stay true to the ones used in the other games in the series and are done quit well. Has a good soundtrack that is somewhat different than the others...which was oddly missing the main MGS theme song that has been in the series for a while.

Online: Great online and quit competitive. The single player and multiplayer is integrated into eac other for a different experience. In RC (real combat) you fight others with your trained recruits put if they are non unique characters, they can die for good and the other player can win them for their victory. In VR, it is a simulated fight that your recruits are not up for grabs...this fights has no steaks for lossing. Modes range from the typical deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture missions...which are like capture the flag, but with a kerotan frog instead. There is also the choice of Ad-Hoc and infastructure. Cyber servival ia another neet addition where you send a unit of recuits into the web for the AI to control aganist other AI teams from other players, if you won the match you could posses prisoners for new recruits.

Overall:A great solid game with MGS and Kojima logos. its nice pace for portable games and is a good tide you over for MGS4. Though the overall storyline lacks in depth and does unnecesary changes to the overall plot of the series. A good game non-the-less.
