Lots of old games are getting hi-def updates these days, and according to a report by GzN, SNK’s classic Metal Slug series may be next to receive a modern revision.
"In order to meet our fans demands for an HD version of Metal Slug, we’re considering bringing this series to the new generation of consoles in a similar way to [King of Fighters XII]," said an unidentified SNK Playmore representative to GzN, who went on to say that "We look forward to announcing this someday soon."
Whether this means a brand new Metal Slug game for the HD era or an update of an older title isn’t clear, but the mention of King of Fighters XII -- the latest in the series set for release in April 2009 -- seems to suggest the former. King of Fighters XII also features completely hand-drawn 2D characters and 2D backgrounds, which might suggest a new Metal Slug won’t go the 2.5D route of, say, Capcom’s Bionic Commando: Rearmed.
Of course, that’s all considering SNK Playmore actually does announce a Metal Slug revival, since they’re only "considering" it at the moment. But since they also say they "look forward" to an announcement soon, it seems likely a new Metal Slug is on the way. After all, how often does a company announce that they’re not making a game?
